Government Support and Benefits

Most UK parents qualify for government help, such as Child Benefit (available to nearly everyone, though higher earners may repay some or all through the High Income Child Benefit Charge) and means-tested support like Universal Credit that can boost your household budget by hundreds or thousands of pounds a year. What you can get depends on your income, family type, number of children and sometimes where you live in the UK. Our straightforward guides, grouped by your situation, help you quickly find the right support, check eligibility and claim what’s yours – cutting the confusion and helping your family money go further.

UK Family Benefits Quiz: Find Your Government Assistance Guide

Answer a few quick questions about your household to get directed to our nation-specific article on benefits like Child Benefit, Tax-Free Childcare, and Universal Credit. This takes about 1 minute.

This quiz provides general guidance only and is not personalised financial advice. Always check eligibility on GOV.UK or with official sources.

Help me choose the right household type

Key point: For Child Benefit, Tax-Free Childcare and 30 hours free childcare, you are only treated as a “single parent” if you live completely alone with the child. The moment you live with any partner (married or not), their income and working status count exactly the same.

Household Type Who You Are Treated as single parent? Whose income & work rules apply?
Single parent (lone parent) One parent, no partner living with you Yes Only your income & work
Parent + non-parent partner
(e.g. new boyfriend/girlfriend, fiancé(e), remarried)
Biological/adoptive parent living with a partner who is not the child’s other parent No – treated as a couple Both your and your partner’s income & work
Two biological/adoptive parents Child living with both original parents No Both parents’ income & work
Separated – child mainly lives with you Child’s primary home is with you Yes (if no new partner) Only your household (you + any new partner)
Separated – genuine shared care Child splits time roughly 50/50 Each parent assessed separately Only the applying parent’s household
Adjusted net income is your total taxable income minus certain deductions like pension contributions or Gift Aid. Use the GOV.UK Child Benefit tax calculator to check precisely.
